Too many Seamen have died as a result of avoidable Slips, Trips and Falls.
In this film, the first in the 'Risk Assessment' series from Walport Maritime Training Films, we look at Risk Assessment with the aim of reducing the incidence of 'Slips, Trips and Falls' onboard. This class of accident continues to cost the maritime industry dearly - in time, money and unnecessary suffering.
Filmed onboard a working cargo vessel, the film encourages crew to take responsibility for their own safety - as well as that of their crew mates and their ship - by taking a fresh look at Risk Assessment.
We explain that Risk Assessment isn't just a paperwork exercise, something for the senior officers to worry about, but something that every crew member should think about. It's not just about looking, but seeing - seeing a problem, seeing a danger, and doing something about it - rather than dealing with the painful consequences.
We discuss previous incidents where even a basic risk assessment by any of the crew involved could have avoided a tragic accident. Risk Assessment isn't complicated. It's about being aware, all of the time.
"Risk Assessment means thinking about "what could go wrong?" and dealing with it before it becomes "what went wrong?"
Make Risk Assessments a part of your daily routine and not just something you do because you're told to.
Take responsibility for safety.
Think first. Take the time to actually see the dangers - get the job done safely, first time.
STOP! The job if you have to.
Ask - question an instruction if it doesn't feel safe.
Maintain three points of contact - "One hand for yourself, one for the ship!"
Make the most of your rest periods - get good relaxation and sleep time.
Wear the correct PPE.

Most major accidents aren?t caused by a single event - they are frequently the result of a chain of minor incidents. If your crew members avoid a slip, a trip or a fall, they can avoid the distraction of a minor incident and may have avoided a major accident.
Most slips, trips and falls are avoidable. Ship-owners and operators have spent the last twenty years or so making their ships physically safer. But a modern ship can still be a dangerous place, as all seafarers know.
